A fleet GPS tracker communicates with satellites to calculate its position, then transmits that data over a cellular network to the software platform, which plots it on a map and stores the route history. Fleet GPS tracking has moved well past simple location pins on a map, with modern systems delivering updates every 10 to 30 seconds along with driver behaviour monitoring and predictive maintenance alerts.

Update frequency matters more than it sounds.

A tracker that pings every 5 minutes is fine for knowing which neighbourhood a van is in; it’s useless for reconstructing exactly what happened before a hard-braking incident. If real-time visibility is the point of buying the system, check the actual ping interval before you buy, not just the word “real-time” on the sales page.

Match the device to the asset. Confirm the vendor offers hardwired options for trucks and battery/solar trackers for trailers not just one device type stretched across your whole fleet.

Check the real update interval. Not just the word ‘real-time’  confirm the actual ping frequency and verify it doesn’t drop on a lower-tier plan.

Ask about contract length. Some GPS tracking vendors require multi-year hardware contracts; others offer month-to-month terms worth confirming before you sign.

Confirm compliance features. EWD integration and CoR reporting shouldn’t be a separate add-on you have to hunt for.
